The way I work

My background’s in marketing, so for me words must work effectively and do their job properly, rather than simply sound good. So whatever your objectives are – to sell, inform, engage or entertain – I’ll focus on the key messages and get them across in the right way for your target audience.

I won’t oversell or promise things you can’t deliver, but I’ll make sure you show off your best bits so customers know what you’re capable of. And I’ll do it in the right tone of voice – sometimes called brand language – to reflect your brand’s personality. If you don’t have one, I’ll help you find it, because that’s central to all your written communications.

How I got here

I’ve worked in the communications industry for over 20 years, both in-house and on the agency side. Before setting up as a freelancer in 2007, I held posts in a local authority, national conservatoire, a creative agency and in the voluntary sector. In each position, it was the writing parts of the role I relished most, so I decided to self indulge.

Since going it alone, I’ve worked in a whole range of sectors including housing, tourism, education, logistics, leisure, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing and professional services. Sometimes there’s a steep learning curve to get up to speed with the relevant industry lingo, but that’s all part of the job.

Who I work with

My clients include local authorities, private companies, housing associations and voluntary organisations.

Why I do it

Because I love it. Plain and simple. Many people shudder at thought of writing or don’t know where to start. But a blank screen really doesn’t faze me. Once I’m clear in my own head what needs to be done, I get a real buzz as the words start to flow and I create a piece of copy which I know will play its part in helping a client achieve success.

Where you’ll find me

I’m based in Ayr town centre, but work with clients across the country. Before COVID-19, sometimes I hot desked in a client’s office, especially for larger projects where I was acting as an extension to their marketing team. Currently all my work is done remotely. While it’s good to talk face to face (and I’m seriously missing my coffee and catch-ups with clients), thanks to Skype, Zoom and Teams I can write for businesses anywhere.
